Aviation Combat Element: Roles
Aviation Combat Element forces include air traffic command and control agencies, aircraft squadrons and combat logistic units, formed around an aviation headquarters.
There are many military occupational specialties within the Aviation Combat Element, and each role is essential to the overall mission. Some of these functions include:
Enlisted Aircrew
• Perform preflight planning and equipment checks
• Operate weapons, sensors and communications equipment in-flight
Air Traffic Control, Air Support and Anti-Air Warfare
• Control air traffic and vehicles within an airport, expeditionary airfield or remote landing site
• Provide early warning and air intercept control
• Direct air operations in support of ground forces
Aviation Operations
• Support refueling, flight planning, and weather operations
• Supervise preparation, movement and placement of air support equipment
Aviation Supply, Maintenance and Ordnance
• Plan, organize and conduct repairs of aircraft, components and equipment
• Assess weapons systems for mission capabilities
• Conduct finance, inventory, facilities, personnel and requisition procedures
Aviation Communication
• Install, test and maintain communications components and equipment
• Inspect and repair communication systems
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operation
• Inspect and maintain UAV airframes and airframe components
• Perform launch and recovery of UAVs
