Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms is the permanent home of Fleet Marine Force units and is a key live-fire training location. The location, near the San Bernardino Mountains, provides ideal terrain for Marines to practice live-fire maneuvers.

Twentynine Palms was commissioned in 1952 in response to the need for more live-fire ranges during the Korean War. Following the completion of an expeditionary airfield, the base was redesigned as Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in 1979.

Due to its location in an arid desert, summer temperatures can peak at 120°F and bottom at 15°F in the winter. Despite the weather, Marines come to Twentynine Palms throughout the year to conduct live-fire combined arms training and military operations on urban terrain.

  • MCAGCC covers more than 998 square miles, making it the world's largest Marine Corps base.
  • The MCAGCC's mission is to conduct relevant live-fire combined arms training, urban operations and Joint/Coalition level integration training that promotes operational forces readiness, as well as to provide the facilities, services and support responsive to the needs of resident organizations, Marines, Sailors, and their families today and tomorrow.
  • Twentynine Palms was discovered in 1885 by Col. Henry Washington, who commanded a government survey party. Before the turn of the century, this area was well known by prospectors and miners.
  • The area encompassing Twentynine Palms is the Morongo Basin and is classified as having an arid, upland desert climate. While the average annual temperature is 67 degrees, temperatures regularly reach 120 degrees in the summer and drop to 15 degrees in winter.
  • MCAGCC Twentynine Palms hosts the largest military training program in the nation, known as Mojave Viper. Marines undergo these combined arms, live-fire exercises before deploying into combat environments.
