Professional Opportunities for Women
Strength, drive and character are traits shared by all Marines, regardless of gender. The strenuous trials of Marine Corps Recruit Training show no discrimination.
During World War I, 305 women served in the Marine Corps Reserve, but the unit was deactivated at war's end. On July 30, 1942, The Marine Corps Womens Reserve was reestablished as part of the Marine Corps Reserve. Their mission was to provide qualified women for shore duty, thus freeing men for combat duty. Today, women serve in 93 percent of all occupational fields and 62 percent of all billets. Women constitute 6 percent of the Marine Corps and are an integral part of the Marine Corps.
