David on Respect

David: I've been able to earn respect by giving respect. My name is First Lieutenant David Oliver David. The respect that I've received from my family was all about my culture. It was all about my family. It was respecting my elders. All of those things played a role in what it meant for me to become a Marine Corps officer, and to lead other Marines.

I see respect as something that is both earned and implied. When Marines see me, they see a rank, they know that I am in a position of authority, but at the same time I also give them a reason to respect me, by considering what they need and what their aspirations are, ensuring that those needs are met. They can see that you are a leader, and when they see that then they'll give you their respect.
